What makes CLOWNHAUS® special:
CLOWNHAUS® is a South African Beauty Intelligence Agency built around a simple premise: a cosmetic product is never just a formulation. Every decision travels. A texture may depend on processing; an ingredient can alter claims or regulatory positioning; packaging can influence compatibility and stability; and an attractive commercial idea can fail if manufacturing reality cannot support it.
I work across Cosmetic Science, Formulation Strategy, Regulatory Interpretation, Manufacturing Awareness, and Commercial Product Architecture to help brands identify those consequences early. Although much of the practice is advisory, I remain actively involved in Research & Formulation Development because strategy is strongest when it stays accountable to the physical reality of making products.
What makes CLOWNHAUS® distinctive is therefore not the number of disciplines involved, but the point at which they are brought together. The practice is designed to expose contradictions early, while there is still room to change the product rather than explain its failures later. In that sense, Beauty Intelligence is not another layer added to development. It is the discipline of seeing what one decision is likely to do to everything that follows.
Your role/part:
I am the Founder and Cosmetic Chemist behind CLOWNHAUS® - A BEAUTY INTELLIGENCE AGENCY
My route into cosmetic science was unconventional: I studied towards a business degree specialising in Accounting at Monash South Africa, completed a course in Interior Decorating, and later trained in Personal Care Formulation at The Institute of Personal Care Science.
In retrospect, those fields were less disconnected than they first appeared. However, looking back, Accounting taught me to interrogate structure, constraint, and consequence. Interior Decorating sharpened my sensitivity to proportion, materiality, colour, texture, and how people experience designed objects. Cosmetic Science gave those analytical and creative instincts a discipline in which both could operate at once.
Senior Quality Control and Quality Assurance responsibilities in an FMCG contract-manufacturing environment later changed my perspective again. It taught me that an idea is only as credible as its ability to survive process, documentation, repeatability and manufacture. My role at CLOWNHAUS® now sits at that intersection: translating creative ambition into products that can withstand scientific, operational and commercial scrutiny.
How have your studies helped progress:
The Diploma of Personal Care Formulation at IPCS changed how I understood formulation. Before studying Cosmetic Science formally, it was easy to think about a product in terms of ingredients: what should be included, what benefit each material might offer, and what the finished product should feel or look like. IPCS shifted the unit of thought from ingredients to relationships. A formulation became less a collection of desirable materials and more a system in which every choice altered the behaviour of something else.
That was the most important progression for me. It taught me to move beyond asking, “What should go into this product?” and towards asking, “What must be true for this product to work?” That is a much more demanding question. It forces you to think in terms of cause and effect, trade-offs, compatibility, evidence and the consequences of changing one part of a system.
My later experience in quality, HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) and contract manufacturing expanded that way of thinking from the formulation itself to the conditions required to reproduce it reliably. CLOWNHAUS® grew from that broader perspective.
I was proud to receive Silver Student of the Year recognition during my IPCS studies, but the Diploma's greater value has been its longevity. It did not give me a finished professional identity. It gave me a way of thinking that could absorb everything I learned afterwards.
That is why I see IPCS not as the point at which my education was completed, but as the point at which an unconventional collection of interests of a young, lost adult finally acquired a scientific language and a coherent professional direction.
I am now an official member and Formulation Expert of The Society of Cosmetic Chemists of South Africa (COSCHEM), and subsequently, The International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC).
