Job Purpose

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor and identify innovative concepts and trends in the market relevant to the industry.
  • Development of new products to brief and on time as well as reformulating existing products while reducing complexity and costs of products managing the entire process from conceptualization to full-scale production.

Cosmetic Formulation Chemist

Gold Coast - Australia

We are Australian owned and have been family operated on the Gold Coast. We are now one of Australia's premier TGA and ACO licensed facilities producing natural, botanical, organic, and therapeutic skin, body, and hair care products.

Responsibilities:

  • Establishing production procedures for new products including creating master batch documentation and product specifications
  • Prepare laboratory-scale batches of products for customer samples and various tests.
  • Assist with troubleshooting batch production problems
  • Optimising formulations and/or production procedures for existing products

We are seeking an experienced cosmetic R&D Innovation Chemist to join our team. This is a hands-on, exciting, and challenging opportunity based at our manufacturing facility in Mount Kuring Gai, NSW. This role reports to the Head of Research and development.
Experience in Cosmetic Formulation is Mandatory.
You will be responsible for the development of new products and improving existing products. The role is responsible for formulating and delivering new products to the market through planning and implementing development projects from concept through to full-scale production.

  • Manage and update all product files relating to formulations, raw materials, packaging and suppliers

Requirement:

  • You will hold a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry), Bachelor of Formulation Science or similar qualifications or Diploma of Personal Care Formulation.
  • Minimum of 2+ years experience in developing topical cosmetic products including emulsions

  • Ensures that formula benchmarks/marketing needs are clearly understood for formula development. Ensures that effective dosage for claims substantiation is used in formula. Oversees and maintains the completed formula specification including all technical data (ingredient list, %, INCI, SDS, C of A, ingredient spec sheets) and resolves any discrepancies.
  • Reviews professional journals and scientific papers to keep abreast of changes/issues in processing methods, product formulation, delivery technologies and Legal and Regulatory affairs which could impactthe company products or processes. Notifies Management/Product Marketing of key issues and proactively develops and proposes recommendations to address key issues.
  • Attends all new product first batch runs to oversee process including trial batches and process testing. Maintains production samples (approved/sign off record) library.
  • Submits samples for stability testing for all new products.  Participates in review of stability testing results for final approval.  Ensures quality execution of experiments, including experimental design, data summary and interpretation, report and manuscript preparation and review and adherence to applicable regulations.
  • Performs in-house testing on all new products. Translates all product evaluation test results and insights to be incorporated into product concepts and prototypes.
  • Reviews and provides feedback on product sales and marketing support materials (relative to science and technical data.)

THE ROLE
We currently have a role available for an organised and experienced Laboratory Assistant/Chemist. The primary function of the candidate is to assist the R&D Manager. This role is ideally suited to a recent graduate with some experience or someone with broader experience but wishing to work part time, and who has a genuine interest in personal care products. You will be working with us to create new personal care products within the required time frame, including samples and stability testing

Practical laboratory experience is important, as well as a strong knowledge of general cosmetic product types including an ability to describe sensory aspects of their composition (e.g. viscosity, odour, colour, appearance, texture, skin feel, etc.). 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting with new product development.
  • Working on specific formulation/ reformulation projects under the guidance of the R&D Manager.
  • Preparing lab samples in preparation to send to clients, for PET & Stability testing.
  • Coordinate and send sample requests, documenting which samples are being produced and posted to customers
  • Maintain sample retention library.
  • Prepare ingredient disclosure statements as requested.
  • Administrative tasks associated with product development.
  • Maintain formulation environment according to workplace and regulatory standards, ensuring equipment is calibrated and serviced as required.
  • Ensuring all the necessary documents are up to date and logs are maintained as well as general housekeeping in the lab.
  • As requested, undertake other duties not required by the role, but for the benefit or betterment of the business.
  • Liaise with supplier on product information.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel.

WHAT TYPE OF PERSON DO WE NEED? Ideally, we need someone with the attention to detail, a methodical approach, ability to manage a number of tasks and basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel. The successful applicant must have a positive attitude and high attention to detail, initiative, and motivation.

The successful candidate should have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in this or related industry in a lab and be familiar with basic laboratory equipment like Viscometers, overhead stirrers, homogenisers etc. You should have some Hands-on formulation experience, experience involving surfactants, additives, and preservatives will be highly regarded. Any advanced, or post-graduation experience within a formulation role will be viewed favourably, especially if it is in the personal care industry. The Diploma of Personal Care Formulation or Certificate in Advanced Cosmetic Science from IPCS will be highly regarded. 

You need to possess excellent organisational skills, pay keen attention to detail, and a proven ability to manage multiple concurrent activities while also being able to work autonomously at times.
